Studio Sem is one of the most prestigious and unique studios in Pietrasanta. Founded in the 1950s by the charismatic Sem Ghelardini (1927-1997, one of the first craftsmen to work with artists of the calibre of Henry Moore, Juan Mirò, Henry-Georges Adam and many other famous figures belonging to the first wave of contemporary artists to reach “Versilia” in the 1960s), its 50-year tradition of taking in young sculptors from around the world means that it continues to overflow with an amazing variety of art.
Keara McMartin (director of the studio and herself an artist) explains that “by taking in up-and-coming artists, Sem sought to integrate contemporary art with the craft tradition," and that "working so closely with an artist gives a craftsman the chance to see an idea go through various stages of development before becoming a sculpture in an exchange between craftsman and artist that is of mutual benefit to both.”
The studio often collaborates with its artists, makes sculptures for private individuals, for large scale public works and thematic projects for cruise ships. The works of artists are exhibited in a gallery that is open to the public. Visitors can talk to the artists and craftsmen amongst the dust and constant sound of tools, as they work away at the marble.
