This marble sculpture workshop has roots in the early 20th century. After finishing his training at the “school of marble”, Niccola Giannoni, the grandfather of the present owner, set up shop in Via Santa Maria and set about producing large numbers of classical sculptures for the churches of the world.
With the help of his son, Giuseppe, he was able to build up the business and cater to artists from throughout the world. Later he was able to bring in his grandsons, Niccola and Marco, who now run the company. Working methods have hardly altered since the early 1900s and everything is still done by hand. The only concession to mechanisation is in the use of pneumatic equipment in the early, rough-hewing stage of the marble blocks.
Surrounded by greenery in the centre of Pietrasanta, where time seems to have stood still, they make exact copies of historic masterpieces like Brunelleschi’s tomb for Lorenzo dei Medici, made for a Tokyo museum, or the enormous works of.
